MLA is a Maine-based organization founded in 1891 with the focus of promoting, supporting, and advocating for the public library system. Their goals include providing opportunities for professional development for library workers, ensuring that library workers receive fair wages, providing support for libraries of all types by advocating for intellectual freedom and opposing censorship, ensuring diversity and inclusivity within the library system, and promoting economic and environmental sustainability within their communities.

They work toward these goals by meeting monthly to share and discuss ideas, supporting legislation that aligns with their goals, and through networking and other forms of advocacy.
